First-ever Health Tourism Show takes place in
London
The first-ever Health Tourism Show took place at London's Olympia
Two exhibition centre on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October. Around
30 exhibitors from around the world, including Ukraine, Malaysia,
Lithuania, Malta, Singapore, Cyprus, Turkey, Spain and Hungary
took part in the exhibition, which saw members of the public visiting
to learn more about health tourism, to meet health personnel and
to compare international options. A wide variety of procedures
were available, from nose-reshaping, to breast augmentation and
from IVF to cosmetic dentistry. Three simultaneous seminar sessions
took place, including lively debates in the main seminar theatre.
In addition a great deal of networking between exhibitors took
place at the event's networking reception.
Media interest in the event was intense, with newspaper articles
about the Health Tourism Show and health tourism in general in
theDaily Telegraph, The Times, the Daily Mail, Daily Express and
Evening Standard newspapers. Associated Press wrote an article
on the event which was picked up around the world, while journalists
from a number of UK and international papers attended the event.
In total seven TV crews covered the Health Tourism Show, notably
including Sky News, ITN, Five News, London Tonight, Associated
Press and crews from Cyprus and Turkey. Sky News broadcast live
from the event, as well as broadcasting recorded packages from
the event throughout the day and evening.
Show director Robert McCaffrey commented, "We have all learned
a huge amount about health tourism over the two days of the show
- and many of our exhibitors are delighted to have been at this
inaugural event. A number of exhibitors have already requested
details of the next Health Tourism Show. At the next Health Tourism
Show, we will make a number of changes to further improve the event,
including changing the event to a Friday and Saturday, changing
the venue to better accomodate visitors and exhibitors, including
a medical tourism conference to attract high-powered international
medical tourism practitioners and - crucially - altering the marketing
mix used to promote the show. We are sure that with a full year
to organise and to promote the show - and with the knowledge that
we have gained from staging the first-ever Health Tourism Show
in London - that the second Health Tourism Show will be a big success."
The second Health Tourism Show will take place on Friday 9 and
Saturday 10 October 2009, in London.

Treatment abroad at the health tourism show
Treatment Abroad (www.treatmentabroad.com),
the most visited site on the web for medical tourists will be at
the Health Tourism Show, a brand new event covering practically
every aspect of medical, dental, cosmetic and health treatment
abroad. The team behind www.treatmentabroad.com will
be holding a seminar on the first day of the show called “A
beginners guide to going abroad for treatment” at
13.40 in Seminar 2.
The medical tourism industry is booming throughout the world and
with such a wide range of treatment options and countries offering
competitively priced surgery and dentistry it can be difficult
to make the right decision when choosing treatments and medical
facilities.
The seminar will give event visitors the opportunity to find out
all they need to know about researching and choosing the medical
treatment and facility abroad that is right for them and to hear
expert advice from Keith Pollard, the founder of Treatment Abroad
on what they need to know before travelling for treatment.
“It is vital that medical tourists arm themselves with as
much information as possible before proceeding with any treatment,
which is what we aim to do with our website. Visitors to our seminar
and stand at the Health Tourism Show will have the opportunity
to understand and ask about what travelling abroad for medical
tourism really entails,” says Pollard.
Treatment Abroad is an invaluable online resource, packed with
information about the healthcare services available, doctor accreditation,
patient stories, costs of travel, accommodation and treatment which
helps patients make informed decisions about medical treatment
abroad.
The website constantly introduces new features to give site visitors
as much information as possible before traveling abroad for treatment. Its
newly launched Patient Ratings and Reviews system lets medical
tourists share and rate their experiences and its “Code
of Practice for Medical Tourism”, the first of its kind
in the industry has been set up to encourage the adoption of best
practice in medical tourism through the commitment of international
healthcare providers to a voluntary code of practice.
“A beginners guide to going abroad for treatment” is
in Seminar 2 on 25th October at 13.40.

Health Tourism to be promoted by the NHS -
or not?
Under new EU legislation, patients will be able
to travel abroad in the EU and bill the NHS for their care. Click
here for full story. However, the government has rebutted
this possibility, according to the Press Association: "The Government
has said the NHS will not fund Britons who choose to travel abroad
for medical care, ahead of the publication of proposals on 'health
tourism' within Europe.
A spokesman for the Department of Health said it was "absolutely
committed" to ensuring that the NHS retains its ability
to decide what care it will pay for.
The statement comes as the European Commission is due to publish
a draft directive on cross-border healthcare.
According to the Daily Mail newspaper, the document will be published
on Wednesday setting out proposals to allow patients to shop
around freely in all 27 member states.
In the majority of cases, Britons would be able to send the bill
to the NHS, the paper reported.
The scheme is reportedly aimed at overcoming long waiting lists
as patients would have the right to seek any treatment offered
by the NHS in any country where they could be dealt with more
quickly.
The EU began working on clarifying the rules on the right to
move around Europe for health care partly in response to a European
legal ruling in 2006 which backed the case of 75-year old Briton
Yvonne Watts, who paid £3,900 for a hip replacement in
France because she was not prepared to wait a year for an operation
in the UK.
The NHS refused to reimburse her but the EU judges said she was
entitled to shop around in the EU because of the "undue
delay" in her treatment prospects in Britain.
A Department of Health spokesperson said: "We are waiting
for the Commission to publish a draft directive. We will be examining
the proposals carefully and will be working closely with the
European Commission and other member states to agree a directive
which is acceptable to the UK and protects the NHS.
"The Government is clear that health tourism will not be
funded by the NHS."

The Health
Tourism Show goes LIVE!
The Health Tourism Show is launched, on a short time-line,
taking advantage of a fantastic space and timing opportunity
at London Olympia Two.
Show director Dr Robert McCaffrey commented "The
Health Tourism Show will address a real need in the UK:
waiting lists are still a problem, private health costs
are high and there are concerns about safe provision of
procedures in the UK. The show will give health care providers
the opportunity to meet their potential clients in the
flesh, while the visitors to the show will be able to compare
the providers 'side-by-side.' Health and medical tourism
is all about trust, and this is where trust can be built." |
